Can I be vaccinated if I am already sexually active?
Possibly. Prior sexual activity does not mean exposure to every vaccine-covered HPV type. The expected benefit depends on individual circumstances.
Does the vaccine treat an existing HPV infection?
No. HPV vaccines are preventive; they do not treat an existing infection or abnormal cervical cells.
Will I still need cervical screening?
Yes. Vaccinated patients should continue cervical screening according to the recommendations appropriate for them.
When symptoms are urgent
Severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, heavy bleeding, fainting, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or a possible pregnancy emergency require prompt assessment. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department.
