Is a Pap smear the same as an HPV test?
No. A Pap test looks for abnormal cervical cells, while an HPV test looks for high-risk types of the virus. Depending on age and history, one or both may be recommended.
Does an abnormal result mean cancer?
Usually not. An abnormal result means that follow-up may be needed. The next step depends on the exact result and your prior history.
Do I still need screening after HPV vaccination?
Yes. Vaccination does not replace recommended cervical screening.
When symptoms are urgent
Severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, heavy bleeding, fainting, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or a possible pregnancy emergency require prompt assessment. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department.
